Genesis 10 details the sons of Noah and the nations that their descendants became after the Great Flood. This article gives the skeletal setting of these people’s and is not a comprehensive examination of all the nations that they became.
Genesis 10: 1 - 3: Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood. The sons of Japheth; Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras. And the sons of Gomer; Ashkenaz, and Riphath, and Togarmah.
Gomer became Eastern Europe. Magog became Russia (Ezekiel 38: 2). Madai became the Kurds. Javan became Greece. Tubal became Tobolsk (a city in Siberia). Meshech became Moscow (the capital of Russia). Tiras became Italy. Ashkenaz became Germany. Riphath became Western Europe. Togarmah became Turkey.
Genesis 10: 4 - 5: And the sons of Javan; Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim. By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands; every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations.
Elishah became Sicily. Tarshish became England. Kittim became Cyprus. Dodanim became Rhodes (an island of Greece located in the Aegean Sea).
Genesis 10: 6 - 7: And the sons of Ham; Cush, and Mizraim, and Phut, and Canaan. And the sons of Cush; Seba, and Havilah, and Sabtah, and Raamah, and Sabtecha: and the sons of Raamah; Sheba, and Dedan.
Cush became black Africa (“Ham” means “Hot”; he settled hot Africa). “Mizraim” means in Hebrew, “Two Egypt’s”; ancient Egypt consisted of Lower Egypt and Upper Egypt. “Mizraim” also means “Delineate”; the world was mapped (delineated) soon after the Great Flood. Phut became Libya. Canaan became Israel.
Genesis 10: 13 - 14: And Mizraim begat Ludim, and Anamim, and Lehabim, and Naphtuhim, And Pathrusim, and Casluhim, (out of whom came Philistim,) and Caphtorim.
Philistim became the Palestinians. Caphtorim became Crete.
Genesis 10: 15 - 17: And Canaan begat Sidon his firstborn, and Heth, And the Jebusite, and the Amorite, and the Girgasite, And the Hivite, and the Arkite, and the Sinite,
The Jebusite was the original inhabitant of Jerusalem. The Sinite became the Chinese (Isaiah 49: 12).
Genesis 10: 21 - 23: Unto Shem also, the father of all the children of Eber, the brother of Japheth the elder, even to him were children born. The children of Shem; Elam, and Asshur, and Arphaxad, and Lud, and Aram. And the children of Aram; Uz, and Hul, and Gether, and Mash.
Elam became Iran. Asshur became Syria and Iraq. Arphaxad became northeast Iran. Aram became Damascus (the capital of Syria). Uz became southwest Jordan.
